Hello and welcome from Tenerife Private Tours. My name is John Reid and I will be delighted to show you the remarkable island of Tenerife. I am a qualified Canary Island official tourism guide and was brought up here in the islands when the rhythm of life was perhaps a little gentler. My Scottish ancestors settled here over two hundred years ago so I can tell you quite a lot about the real, native Tenerife, its people and its fascinating history of volcanic eruptions, original Guanche inhabitants, conquest, trade, and even piracy. By private tours I mean that my tours are strictly private and I personally will pick you up at your hotel, cruise port or other agreed meeting point and take you on your chosen route. I have a series of suggested tours and, depending on the one you choose, we will take our time to visit the island’s gems, be they towns, amazing natural treasures, hidden beaches, traditional inns or just somewhere to get a stunning view. From time to time we might go off the beaten path just to catch a glimpse of what one can’t usually see from the main road. We can stop as often as you wish and visit places like the village of Taganana, hidden at the foot of the Anaga Mountains, La Laguna and its historic monuments, the charming town of Garachico, the hidden village of Masca, the Botanical Gardens in the Orotava Valley, the Mount Teide Natural Park or even a banana plantation in the pretty northwest of the island. If requested we can try to make time to sample some of Tenerife's exquisite wines and delicious cuisine. The idea is always to have a pleasant day out, so I prefer not to rush.

A guest is visiting you. Where is the first place you take them?

I offer my guests a number of tours to choose from, so the first place I take them to will depend on the tour they choose to do and on whether they are staying in a hotel or passing by on a cruise ship. This island is like a miniature continent, so there is a wide choice.

Why do you like showing people around?

I enjoy meeting people and love showing them the best of the island's secrets and highlights.

What is your favorite place in the world and why?

I don't know why but I think it would be somewhere in New Zealand.

What are your hobbies outside of being a local guide?

Reading books, writing and splashing about in the sea.

Whats your most memorable moment while on a tour?

Reaching the summit of Mount Teide on foot (which I don't do anymore!)

What kinds of things did you have to go through to become a licensed tour guide for your city?

Difficult written and oral exams

Pineapple on pizza. yes or no?

Only if I'm sharing with someone who does pineapple on pizza. I prefer pizza with serrano ham and rocket (arugula). Sorry!

Whats the local tourist trap you think people should avoid when visiting?

I'd prefer not to say, as I might upset someone.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I sometimes talk too much.

Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

Lawrence of Arabia or Robinson Crusoe

Would you like to be famous? In what way?

Not really. But I wouldn't mind becoming a best selling author.

What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?

A job well done and happy guests.

For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

My family

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

The quality of being patient and the ability to play a musical instrument

What is your most treasured memory?

Without meaning any disrespect to those whom I love, my most treasured memory was scoring a century in a cricket match.

Who's your biggest hero?

In the past, Lawrence of Arabia and my father. Today, my sons.

What is your favorite food? Where's the best place to get it?

If by the sea, grilled octopus. In a town called Garachico. If in the hills, goat meat stew, in a hamlet called Chinamada.

What outdoor activity haven’t you tried, but would like to?

Paragliding.
